John Spencer McLean was born 12th October 1915. There are a few pictures of him as a young child with his siblings. Not much known of his childhood. It appears he and his brothers, Lin and Kevin, were involved in some sort of scouts however the back of this picture has the inscription "S.J.C. McLean" so it could possibly even be Spencer and his brothers Charlie and Frank?

There are pictures of him enjoying a day at the beach with his sister Yvonne.

"Spencer, taken on the beach. Not a very good one Auntie but will send some more of us all soon. Yvonne"

John died in 1935 when he committed suicide in his Bondi flat. His cause of death as determined by a coronary inquest was determined as ‘carbon monoxide poisoning wilfully caused by inhaling a quantity of coal gas’.

The rumour, as heard from Maryanne McLean who was told by her mother Joy who was told by Kathleen, goes like this. John worked at the bank and for reasons unknown was embezzling funds from the bank. Either he got caught or felt guilty and that is said to be the reason behind the suicide.
