The following paragraph's content is derived from this important Court Record:
In 1854 she was working for a Doctor Andrew Aldcorn in Mayfield, Shoalhaven. Here she met Alexander McLean who was at Dr Aldcorn's injured at the time. Christina Lamond testified in court to say that Alexander "Sandy" McLean seduced her with the promise of marriage, took her hand and swore by God he would marry her within 3 weeks, then lay with her. A month later he came back to the farm and lay with her again (term used was "had connection with"). She testified that within that month, she 'made connection' with nobody else. She notified Alexander McLean 6 weeks before John was born and he claimed the baby wasn't his. in February 1856, Christina took him to court (a very brave thing to do at the time, to publicly acknowledge a baby out of wedlock) with the help of Dr Aldcorn to file for child support. At which time she stated she didn't know the actual date of birth of the child but it had just turned 4 months old. By 1857, all claims were settled and Alexander McLean was ordered to pay 3 shillings a week for two years (see here for rough guide to how much money this would have been). A local man named Bernard Brown was in charge of collecting money and such at the time and in his diaries he writes of getting 3pounds 14shillings from Alex McLean in Feb 1856 and again getting 3pounds 19shillings in Feb 1857 to give to Christina Lamond for "maintenance" of the child. It is this consistency of being in the Shoalhaven, and his namesake and locality, that the Alexander McLean mentioned as John's father is that of Alexander McLean, farmer of Broughton Creek, Shoalhaven, son of Allan McLean and Janet McFarlane. Please see his profile for info.
On Aug 6th, 1856, she married Alexander McDonald in 'Dry Run' in Shoalhaven.
1. Christina Lamond with Alexander McDonald.
She gave birth to her first child with Alexander McDonald in 1857 and while living in Shoalhaven, they had another 5 children making 7 total. Around 1867 they moved from Broughton Creek in Shoalhaven to Richmond River where they had another 3 children. Christina had 9 children with Alexander McDonald.
Christina McDonald (nee Lamond) passed away in 1913 in Lismore.
